Breast Reduction – An Overview

There is good reason this surgery has consistently been associated with the highest patient satisfaction scores in the entire field of Plastic Surgery for many years.

It works.

In the right patient, breast reduction surgery can significantly improve symptoms of discomfort of the neck, upper back and shoulder area where bra grooving can be seen. Patients often say that they can stand straighter and participate in activities without pain that they have not been able to before.

During breast reduction surgery, the nipple will be moved to a more youthful and higher position and excess breast tissue will be removed to reduce weight and volume of the breast. While there is a technique in which surgeons totally remove the nipple and place it back as a graft (free nipple graft technique), Dr. Lefkowitz always uses a “pedicle technique” which keeps the nipple attached to the breast while it is moved into its correct position. By using this technique, every attempt is made to preserve sensation for the patient post operatively.

Breast Reduction Surgery (as opposed to Breast Lift Surgery) has historically been considered by the insurance companies to be “medically necessary.” Thus, breast reduction surgery is typically a covered surgery with most insurance plans. However, it has become more difficult to get this surgery covered based on very strict criteria that has to be met. With that said, many of Dr. Lefkowitz’s patients who do get denied by the insurance company will proceed with the surgery as an out of pocket expense because of how life changing the surgery can be.

Am I a good candidate?

Good candidates are those with a BMI (Body Mass index) equal to or less than 30, non tobacco/vape users, are in overall good health and have breasts that are larger in proportion to the rest of their body.

At your consultation Dr. Lefkowitz will thoroughly review the details of surgery and help you decide if it is right for you.
