Unlike most traditional necklifts, the Deep Necklift addresses the platysma muscle (platysmaplasty) and the structures below the muscle that contribute to an aging neck. These can include the subplatysmal fat, the digastric muscles, and the submandibular glands. With traditional necklifts, only the platysma is addressed (and sometimes not even the platysma) which can lead to less than ideal results.
Dr. Lefkowitz prefers to perform Deep Necklifts in additional to treating the platysma (platysmaplasty) to address the anatomical issues that are contributing to poor neck contour. Access to all of these are gained through a small incision under the chin which allows direct visualization and instrument access.
It is extraordinarily rare for a patient to simply have excess subcutaneous fat (fat just beneath the skin) as the main contributor to poor neck contour. Thus, if only liposuction or other non/minimally invasive treatments are performed, a suboptimal result will occur. Therefore, it is of paramount importance for the main contributors to an aging neck be addressed to attain optimal results. A Deep Necklift is indicated to achieve this.
