Liposuction of the submental region is a sought after procedure due to its short downtime and minimal scars. It can produce great results in the appropriate patient. The submental region refers to the “double chin” or under chin region that many patients are bothered by.
Liposuction (removing fat) of the submental region uses a small instrument (suction cannula) through 3 tiny pinhole incisions, addressing the under side of the chin as well as the side of the neck to enhance the jawline and improve the contour under the chin.
Why Submental (Chin/Neck) Liposuction instead of Kybella?
I believe that liposuction more accurately and definitively addresses the fat that causes the cosmetic issues in this region. Having performed Kybella for many years, I have also found that Kybella causes significantly more scarring in an unpredictable manner. In addition, Kybella often takes multiple treatments with associated cosmetic downtime after each treatment. This downtime is known as the “bullfrog neck” effect from the swelling after the injections.
What is the Downtime after Liposuction of the Submental Region/Chin/Neck?
Most patients take about 5 days off of school/work and see their final results at about 6 weeks.
The cosmesis of the scars along with sensation will continue to improve well after this time.
Am I a good candidate for Liposuction?
Typically, patients that do well are younger patients (Teens, 20’s, early 30’s) that have good quality skin and fat that is mainly just under the skin and above the muscle (platysma). Heavier neck patients and older patients typically have neck and jawline contour issues that cannot be addressed with liposuction alone and are much better off with a Traditional or Deep Neck Lift.
