Otoplasty is an outpatient procedure that can completely transform lives and confidence.
For both adults and kids, ears that stick out too far can be the source of extreme anxiety and loss of self-confidence. It can also be the source of teasing and bullying from others. Technically known as “Prominent Ears”, this occurs often times at birth and can progress in the early years of childhood. Fortunately, there is a wonderful procedure that can correct this with almost completely hidden scars.
The ears have reached about 85-90% of their total size, shape and prominence by 5 years of age. This also happens to be the age in which children often start getting teased about their ears. Once a child gets to 5 or 6 years of age, an otoplasty surgery can significantly help correct and improve prominent ears. This procedure can also help adults who are self-conscious the appearance of their ears.
There are two distinct reasons why ears take on a prominent appearance:
- Too much conchal cartilage that is most noticeable from the back
- Lack of Antihelical folding (the ear does not fold back as much as it should)
Surgery addresses both of these reasons and places the ear back into position while maintaining a natural curvature. This produces an aesthetically pleasing “non-operated on” appearance to give patients new found confidence going forward.
Additionally, the scar is hidden behind the ear where the ear meets the scalp. No scars are placed on the front of the ear.
